Show Programs and Directories

January 2, 2015 by emilym Leave a Comment

Some of the largest and most challenging projects I worked on at I-5 Publishing, LLC. were the show programs. These projects were unique as we created them for a contracted client who organized several consumer expos and Super Zoo the largest pet industry trade show.

The programs for SuperZoo were a 154 page tabloids published with live news for each of the three days of the trade show. Each book included news, general show information,  a complex adaptation of a cad generated floor map, more than 100 ads and a very challenging vendor directory. For the project I worked with internal editors and production coordinator as well as our outside clients, to integrate quality graphic design while adapting a complex database into a functional and useable resource for members of the industry to reference after the show. For this project we also designed a much more portable pocket guide featuring a fold out map that could be used to navigate the ever growing conference.

The Show programs for the same client’s consumer expos, America’s Family Pet Expo and and the Aquatic Experience were much easier and lent themselves to fun and family oriented design.

Calendar Design

January 1, 2015 by emilym Leave a Comment

During my time with I-5 Publishing,  LLC.  I had the opportunity to design a lot of calendars. These were given out to subscribers as a gift for signing up or purchasing a gift subscription. They were each designed to have their own layout style and I worked with each editorial team to include elements they felt fit their readers best.

Here are a few of the latest calendars I designed:

Oh Lardy! and Rumination Station – HobbyFarms.com

October 11, 2014 by emilym Leave a Comment

I loved working with HobbyFarms.com, but to say that some of the topics were foreign and a bit out there for me would be an understatement. Two of my favorite went way beyond my knowledge base. There is nothing like explaining at a staff meeting that you are working on an info-graph about lard or the ruminant digestive track of farm animals.

For the “Rumination Station” graphic I collaborated with the in house illustrator Tom Kimbal. I created the over all look and had him draw the 4 cartoons of the cow doing various activities. I drew the rest of the visual elements. I really like how the two styles compliment each other and in the end I think we did a very good job presenting a rather complex subject in a very easy to understand format. The ultimate compliment was when we had readers requesting poster size prints for their classrooms and 4-H clubs.

The “Oh Lardy!” Graphic I worked closely with the editor who requested a modern yet classic feel for the graphic that was focusing how to use the classic comeback fat in cooking. we went with a duo-tone color scheme  and I drew all of the illustrations and charts resulting in a fun “pinable” resource.

Among dog breeders, judges and handlers in the know, Dogs in Review is the success story of the decade and the go-to glossy magazine for showcasing the finest dogs in the nation and beyond.”

Butchering Chart | HobbyFarms.com

August 26, 2014 by emilym Leave a Comment

I illustrated this butchering chart for HobbyFarms.com. We were going for a vintage feel and the chalk board style really fit well for this topic. I worked with both In-Design and Photoshop to create the synthetic chalk board style of the graphic. This was a time intensive design as each letter had to be manually tooled to fit the spaces.  It was particularly fun that several readers wanted to know where they could purchase a poster print of this web info-graph.

Non-Profit Work

August 26, 2014 by emilym Leave a Comment

In the time between my staff work for the OC Register and BowTie (now I-5 Publishing) I served for a year in the AmeriCorps Vista program. VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a program similar to the Peace Corps but service is of a indirect nature working with domestic organizations here in the U.S.

As a member of the AmeriCorps VISTA program I worked on several marketing and nonprofit resource projects for CONNECT. I produced, wrote, edited and designed, 4 issues of the Quarterly Connections. These magazine style newsletters provided articles and resources to help nonprofits increase their sustainability. I also worked with constant contact to generate by-weekly e-mail newsletters offering similar tips and resources.
Full issues are available on issuu.com/connectoc.

During this time I also worked to found the AmeriCorps and VISTA Roundtable of Orange County. Including the development of branding and marketing materials.
